In this kind of environment, I felt very outside in terms of my thinking that I couldn’t act according to my feelings because I didn’t want to be an outcast and I had no sexual attraction to people who I felt would brutalize me psychologically for having sex. The minute I got out of that town, I went to New York to be a student at 17. I felt that in such a large city I could be so anonymous that no matter what anyone thought, I could engage in sex secretly now I’m alone. I could find out all about it.”
